Designing Grounding Systems that Safely Dissipate Fault Currents and Disperse Lightning Current

This session, given by Ivan Grobbelaar, PE, Senior Engineer at DEHN Africa, illustrates the differences between simulations for power frequency faults and lightning strike conditions.  This webinar illustrates the modeling process and emphasizes the different computational and analysis methods for each. He provides the safety analysis for the human body with standard safety limits for touch and step voltages. As a comparison, Ivan shows lightning simulations ground potential rise, lightning current distribution,  and LPS component test ratings. He shows an example of a system that is safe for power frequency faults,  but not for lightning current distribution.  He demonstrates using XGSLab software as an effective simulation tool to show risks that can guide repair recommendations to adapt the grounding system to enhance lightning performance.
