A Great Addition to My Offered Services

Colin Green wanted to increase his service offerings for his clients. XGSLab provided the solution. Colin is an electrician and engineer with 20 years of industry experience. For the last 8 years, he has been working as an independent consultant with service companies and manufacturers. Colin described his consulting business in the following terms. “I’m a consultant engineer, when my customers need a skillset that they don't have, or they are just strapped for manpower. They outsource their engineering to me now and I have no overhead, so I can provide affordable rates and that gives them the ability to subcontract those services to me.” Colin provides engineering services for low, medium, and high voltages power systems including: short circuit device evaluation, coordination, arc flash, ground grid design, harmonic analysis, and design and drafting services for control schematics and wiring diagrams.

When Colin initially began researching grounding software packages that would meet the needs of both his consulting company and the needs of his clients, he considered the following requirements: a grounding software package that provided extensive capabilities, the investment price of the software, the price of annual maintenance, and how long it would take him to recoup his investment. Colin has an ETAP license, but after researching their software’s grounding capabilities he found it was too limited to suit his needs. He also researched CDEGS but found that he needed to have significant business volume to justify the investment price of their software license.

Expanding My Offerings

Colin has used EasyPower for arc flash studies in the past. He began researching the XGSLab grounding software package that EasyPower offers, and it met his requirements for the purchase. In the end, Colin chose XGSLab over other grounding software options. Colin said XGSLab “kind of fit right in the sweet spot. The program has been great. It didn't take me too long to learn it. It works well with AutoCAD, and it's super straightforward and easy. Having had experience with other software in the coordination arc flash side of things, I am kind of familiar with the data process and entering the information. It works great for my needs.”

Colin also mentioned how pleased he was to use XGSLab as a bolt-on service. “So as a bolt-on service (an additional service he can offer to existing customers), XGSLab has been fantastic. I spent maybe six weeks really getting acquainted with the tech and being able to dip my toes into a simple study. And then four months later, I said well I can do more advanced studies. So, it just kind of goes along with services that you can add on permanently, and once you develop the skillset and you are familiar with it, you've got it forever. It's great. And yeah, it's been awesome!”

Fantastic Customer Service

When it comes to customer support Colin compared his experience between XGSLab and ETAP. “The support from XGSLab has been fantastic, super responsive. David is quick to respond to any inquires that I have and suggestions too. I fired off some, hey what about this? This would be nice to have. It gets into the queue pretty quick. In terms of support, the only comparison I have is to ETAP. ETAP has good support, but it's not personal.”

XGSLab grounding software has helped Colin complete eleven grounding studies to date since his purchase in August of 2020. Colin stated he would recommend XGSLab without hesitation. “It just increases my ability to make money from my desk at my home versus being in the field.”
