Application of Arc Flash Relays and High-speed Grounding Systems to Mitigate Arc Flash Hazards

Arc flash hazards are well-documented issues that exist in many installations and can be fatal if the protective devices are not properly designed. This webinar, presented by Dwaraka Padimiti, Field Application Engineer at ABB, talks about the different solutions available to substantially reduce incident energy levels by mitigating an arc flash incident in MV or LV systems. One solution is to use arc flash light-sensing relays with current sensing in conjunction with high-speed grounding systems. This converts an impending and developing arc flash situation in switchgear to a three-phase bolted fault in less than a quarter (1/4th) of an electrical cycle, thereby driving the system voltage to zero. The residual three-phase to ground fault is eventually cleared by the overcurrent protection system. In this webinar, he discusses example case studies that showcase the effectiveness of such solutions.
